Ellison Onizuka
🚀 Yesterday I attended a small birthday party at a park near my house. The park is Challenger Seven Memorial Park named after the Challenger Space Shuttle that tragically exploded in January 1986.
💔 I have made a few posts about this in the past with heartbreaking facts and I have many reason to never forget this devastating event; one being that my friend’s dad lost his life that day.
🤯 Two days in a row, fate reminded me of Mr. Onizuka. So, I decided to make a post…explanation to follow. Astronaut Ellison (El) Onizuka was from Hawaii and the first Asian American of Japanese ancestry to reach space. He achieved this goal on a prior mission, STS 51-C
❤️ At Challenger Park, there is a building painted with an amazing mural of the 7 crew members that were lost that day. And….just the day before, I was watching Star Trek (as I often do! 🖖🏼) and noticed on The Next Generation, Data was getting out of a shuttle craft named “Onizuka”. I never knew, all these years as a Trekkie, that they named this after Mr. Onizuka. 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
