Mahalaya is an important day for Hindus the world over. Mahalaya marks the start of the Durga Puja Festival. On this day, the goddess Durga is believed to have descended to Earth. Today, almost every Hindu wakes up to 4 am in the morning, tunes into the radio to listen to the recital of Mahisasura Mardini by Birendra Krishna Bhadra and go for a walk to mark the beginning of the much awaited Festival. On the occasion of Mahalaya, the idol of Goddess Durga is given eye i.e. "Chokhudan". After the day the idol remains no longer an ordinary status, rather it is said to be the real Mother Goddess.💜
